How to Take Care of Your Skin: 5 Helpful Tips

The value of the skincare industry is set to reach $200 billion before the end of the decade as more and more of us make a concerted shift towards skin health.

But if you want beautiful skin, it’s not enough to buy into this trend by stocking up on all the latest creams and serums. The key to caring for your skin is knowing which skincare products your skin needs in particular, as well as how and when to use them.

Want to know how to take care of your skin? Let’s take a look at some top healthy skin tips!

1. Know Your Skin Type

Caring for your skin is a lot easier when you know what you’re dealing with. The four basic skin types are:

  • Dry
  • Oily
  • Normal
  • Combination

To find out which you are, wash your face but don’t apply any products afterward.

Your skin will soon start to feel dry or oily if you have one of those skin types. Normal skin tends to feel somewhere in the middle, while those with combined skin types will notice dry patches and oily areas. With this information, you can then choose skincare products designed with your skin type in mind.

2. Cleanse and Cleanse Again

Every good skincare routine starts with a clean base. And no, taking your warpaint off with a makeup wipe does not count!

Instead, you should be cleansing every morning and double-cleansing every night, first with an oil-based balm and then with a milk or gel cleanser. Even if you don’t wear makeup, double-cleansing is vital for balancing your skin’s pH level and removing the grime, bacteria, and SPF on your face.

So, you’re thinking about switching to cleansers made from organic ingredients, huh? Well, let me tell you, you’re making a wise choice! You can opt for soaps made from organic materials, such as aloe vera, lavender, tea tree oil, or goat milk. Goat milk soap, for instance, is packed with nutrients that are great for your skin. It also contains lactic acid, which helps to exfoliate dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. On the other hand, Aloe vera soaps have a skin soothing effect and will help you reduce skin irritation and breakouts. It is essential to know your skin type to make the right choice.

3. Wear SPF Every Day

While we’re on the subject of SPF, a broad factor sunscreen – and ideally SPF50 – is always a must.

Although new innovations such as this treatment can help with discoloration as a result of sun exposure as well as other issues, prevention is always better than cure. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s harmful rays can penetrate our skin and lead to skin cancer, dark patches, and wrinkles.

4. Apply Your Products in the Right Order

If you’ve recently added several new skincare products into your routine, one of the toughest parts to work out is when to apply what and in which order.

A general rule of thumb is to apply your products from thinnest to thickest. This means that mists and essences go first, then water-based serums, then oil-based products, then heavy creams and moisturizers. And during the day, SPF goes last.

5. Use Chemical Exfoliants

Understanding how to care for your skin means knowing which products strengthen your skin barrier – and which can harm it. As tempting as it is to use physical exfoliants such as scrubs, these are often too harsh for the delicate skin on your face.

Instead, you should stick to acids, aka chemical exfoliants as these remove dead skin in a gentle yet effective way. AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) are great if you have sensitive skin and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) work well for exfoliating oily or spot-prone skin.
